The Emoji Movie was released on July 28th, 2017 it grossed over $217 million worldwide however it was panned by critics. It's also award winning, at the 38th Golden Raspberry Awards it won in four categories: Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst screen Combo and Worst screenplay. When the sequel comes out it will be important that the studios and creators look at the complaints from the first movie and see how they can make sure the sequel is more successful and doesn't have as many negative reviews.

The Emoji Movie first come about when the director wanted to take a new concept of animated movies, this was modelled from Tony Leondis' love of Toy Story. After thinking to himself "what is the new toy out there that hasn't been explored?" While thinking of this idea Leondis wanted to originally do a movie where emojis were in the real world but was convinced by his producer that a movie about emojis living inside a phone was a better idea. While many people hated the movie for being "unfunny, and a waste of time". Several outlets for media and movies, including the BBC News called The Emoji Movie one of the worst movies of 2017. Another reviewer (David Ehrlich from IndieWire) claimed that "The Emoji Movie is very, very, very bad... but real life is just too hard to compete with right now".

When the sequel comes out it will be important that the studios and creators look at the complaints from the first movie and see how they can make sure the sequel is more successful and doesn't have as many negative reviews.
